5 Survival Horror Games That Are Actually Survival Horror

Survival Horror - a genre that has undergone significant change almost to the point it is unrecognisable by veterans. The increasing focus on action and adventure has seen the traditional staples of the genre fall by the wayside, creating almost a sub-genre that could be known as action horror.

I wrote a lengthy piece on the transformation yesterday, but now I bring to you 5 Survival Horror games that are actually Survival Horror.

Resident Evil: Revelations | 3DS

Resident Evil Revelations

The latest in the Resident Evil franchise went back to basics (in some respects) and expertly melded the action orientated gameplay of Resident Evil 5 and the survival horror staples that made the series so popular in the first place. Players will take control of several characters in a world-wide story as an evil terrorist group plans to release a devastating virus into the ocean. It's tense, it's scary and it's the best that the series has offered in years.

Dead Rising 2 | Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC

On one hand Dead Rising 2 could be considered a depressing Dad simulator, but mostly it provides a new look at the survival horror genre. Players are let loose in an open space, with literally thousands of zombies, and they must find anything they can to use as weapons. Poker machines, swords, baseball bats - you name it, you can use it. There's a time limit, limited health, weapons break after extensive use, and you need to keep your daughter alive with regular Zombrex injections. Survival horror has never been this ridiculous, or this fun!

Project Zomboid | PC, Mac, Linux

Project Zomboid

This indie title has been making waves for quite some time on platforms such as Desura. A top-down survival horror with RPG elements that has players foraging for items during the day and securing a safe place to hide at night. Players will need to explore their neighbourhood to find food, weapons and supplies, and then try to barricade a house of operations and get some rest. The game is still in development, however people can pre-purchase it now to have Alpha access which is updated regularly with new elements. Project Zomboid is shaping up to be a brand new kind of survival horror.

Lone Survivor | PC, Mac

Lone Survivor

Another interesting take on the classic survival horror recipe. Lone Survivor is a 16-bit inspired side-scroller that focuses heavily on story and survival. Players will need to search for food, hide from enemies, sleep and scavenge for weapons to survive. As the game progresses you will be questioning your own sanity to a point where everything seems like a facade waiting to be discovered. Don't let the retro art style fool you, this is survival horror at its finest.

DayZ | PC

DayZ

It doesn't get more intesne than DayZ, a free mod for ARMA II that has gained worldwide media attention. Players start off with nothing more than a backpack and a flashlight as they head into a massive world filled with zombies. Players will need to move from town to town, looking for weapons, food, medical supplies and more. They also have to content with the elements as spending too much time in the cold can lead to infection. DayZ makes Bear Grylls look like a crying child, and that's why every true survival horror fan needs to download it now!

As far as I'm concerned I think Lone survivor is the only Survival horror out of the 5, Although I haven't played it yet.

In DayZ I'm only afraid about wasting time by accidently pulling a zombie, After 20 minutes of sneaking.

I played a very tiny bit of PZ, definitely something should be look into if you like Survival, it's survival is probably about onpar maybe better than DayZ.

DR2 should not even be there.

No Opinion on RE:R haven't played that either.

TL;DR Most of those games have some/a lot of survival elements, but none of them that I have played can I say are horrifying.
Forgive me it seems i'm always so damn negative around here but you guys don't help me writing stuff like this.
I mean seriously @Heller you whine about games not being survival horror when their touted to be yet this article shows you don't have a clue! I wouldn't consider any of these survival horror at least not as i remember it... i mean Dead Rising 2? seriously?
Trying to keep this list current, for new and current games, not living in the past.

If we were adding games from the past none of these would have qualified at all, trust me.
DayZ is definately survival, but possibly not horror. You do panic like a little girl whenever you see bandits though, plenty of horror in that. :P
I would have put the walking dead =D
It's an adventure game, not really survival at all. Fantastic adventure though!

More like annoying, deciding whether or not to try reasonimg with them or killing them on sight because they'll kill you on sight if you tried to reason with them. [Rage]

Arma II is still easy enough to kill a man or two, if you have the reflexes, and didn't give away your position too quickly it is a combat simulator after all.

It's probably more like adrenaline than horror you feel imo, it's definitely the high light considering they have the highest chance to kill you, and are unpredictable.
I think the closest to survival horror i have experienced this gen would be the first Dead Space on the hardest difficulty. The first Condemned was quite good but i'm not sure weather i would class it survival horror, it made me jump a few times and on its hardest setting it was quite tough.
Dark Souls is another one, it definitely registers as a survival title! but horror? yes but not in a 'it made me jump, scary way' more that it features dark tones, demons and gore. It does scare you though i suppose, many atimes ive crapped my pants and run in the opposite direction scared for my life especially when i haven't saved for a while lolz, many 'shit, what the hell is that moments' too.
All valid candidates, I was actually tossing up whether I should include Condemned but ultimately decided I wanted games from the past few years/months rather than going back to launch titles.
Not sure about Dead Rising 2. It's kind of a strange game in that you're always looking for new items because they break so easy, but there's a lot around. It's kind of survival-zombie-action-horror-drama-comedy :P
Get the Adobe Flash Player to see this video.
NOW THIS IS SURVIVAL HORROR
No mention of "Amnesia: The dark Descent"?
I want an actual game like DayZ. That is the sort of thing that interests me. I guess The Last of Us is a bit similar in terms of survival tactics.
I have to admit, Resident Evil.. Growing up scared the shit out of me. =_=
