Last week we gave our Nintendo E3 2010 predictions. Now it’s time to look at what really matters: the games.
Nintendo’s conference last year was somewhat overshadowed by the hardware on-show from Sony and Microsoft. However, they arguably had the best software line-up and as a result 12 months later they’ve been able to deliver more than their competitors from last year’s show with the likes of New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Galaxy 2 already available.
Let’s take a look at the best games we expect to see from Nintendo at E3 2010.
Zelda Wii
Platform: Wii
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo EAD
Nintendo fans probably don’t care what Nintendo do with the remaining 80 minutes of their conference, as long as they have a good showing for the upcoming Zelda Wii. It was teased at the round table discussions last year, but expect an official announcement including a name, trailer and release date - perhaps even for the end of this year.
Metroid: Other M
Platform: Wii
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Project M (Team Ninja, Nintendo SPD Prod. 1, D-Rockets)
Metroid: Other M was nice surprise out of last year's event. Nintendo concluded their conference announcing a new Metroid game that combined the traditional 2D gameplay with the 3D titles we’ve grown to love. It won’t be developed by Retro Studios, but a development group, Project M, assembled specifically for the game.
Metroid: Other M is the only big release we know Nintendo is definitely releasing this year, so expect it to get heaps of promotion during E3 and a mention in the conference with a new trailer.
Pikmin 3
Platform: Wii
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: TBC
Pikmin 3 hasn’t been confirmed yet, but Nintendo are generally quiet prior to their conference and will certainly announce something big we don’t know about. We expect that to be Pikmin 3 for the Wii as we know a Pikmin game has been in development for a while now and it’s only a matter of time until it's announced.
Pokemon Black & White
Platform: DS
Publisher: Nintendo & The Pokemon Company Developer: Game Freak
Pokemon Black & White will be the biggest DS title on show this year and perhaps the console’s swan song with the impending release of the 3DS. It’ll be released in Japan towards the end of 2010 but won’t see a Western release until almost this time next year.
A total of seven 5th generation Pokemon have been announce so far and more could easily be revealed at E3. Expect a new trailer and some gameplay footage.
Golden Sun DS
Platform: DS
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Camelot
Golden Sun DS was literally teased at E3 last year, for all of about 10 seconds, and then fell off the face of the Earth. Expect to hear a lot more about the third Golden Sun title, including new trailers and gameplay. Hopefully, we’ll even get a western release date before the end of the year, as the DS is in need of another big title in 2010.
EA Sports Active 2.0
Platform: Wii
Publisher: Electronic Arts (EA)
Developer: EA
It mightn’t sound like a ‘quality’ title, but the first EA Sports Active was actually quite good and gave Wii Fit a run for its money. The sequel will be heading to the PS3 as well as the Wii, thanks to PS Move, which might reflect in the gameplay targeting a wider audience. Hopefully it’s an improvement on the first title and succeeds in its goal of getting people off the couch whilst having a Wii.
Super Scribblenauts
Platform: DS
Publisher: Warner Bros.
Developer: 5th Cell
Super Scribblenauts is a very exciting prospect and sequel to one of the best games on DS. Developer 5th Cell has already revealed they plan to improve the physics and controls along with the inclusion of a better level editor. A big gameplay change will allow players to enter characterizations to words, such as “spiked refrigerator” rather than refrigerator. The first game did not allow players to enter adjectives or characterize words in anyway, opening up a new range of possibilities.
Conduit 2
Platform: Wii
Publisher: SEGA
Developer: High Voltage Software
The Conduit was a great FPS on a console that after 4 years still hasn’t mastered the genre. The sequel introduces a lot of things, including an all new cover system and improved use of the motion controls. The first game was hyped more than any other third party game on Wii, long before it had a publisher. Hopefully the sequel won’t be put under the same level of pressure and High Voltage Software can surprise us as a result.
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Platform: Wii
Publisher: Activision
Developer: Treyarch
The Wii missed out on Modern Warfare 2, but with Treyarch back at the helm Black Ops is heading Wii-ward. We don’t have to worry about another dodgy COD port, as Treyarch has revealed they have a separate team working on a version being built for the Wii from the ground up.
Vitality Sensor & software
Platform: Wii
Publisher: TBC
Developer: TBC
Nintendo has promised to announce and display software that utilizes the Vitality Sensor. Wii Relax is one prospect, but from the sounds of things there’ll be more than just that. Here’s hoping they don’t do something stupid.
Notable Mentions
- Epic Mikey (Wii)
- Lost in Shadow (Wii)
- Dragon Quest IX (DS)
- Sonic Colours (Wii & DS)
- Fifa 2011 (Wii)
Possible Surprises
The following games are strictly speculation, but with Nintendo anything could happen.
- Star Fox
- Kirby
- Kid Icarus
- Donkey Kong
- Luigi (‘s Mansion?)
We haven’t seen any of the above from Nintendo for too long. Could they announce a new game in one of more of these series at E3?
