The end of EB Games?

The fact of the matter is that the court has opened up a big honking loophole that publishers -- who we all know would love to KILL the used game market -- will send their legal departments into overdrive to try to exploit if at all possible.

I mean, if it wasn't the death of the used-game market that killed off game retailers, it would eventually be digital distribution, but still, what do we all think about this?

On my old net plan I was stressing about DD cause I was on a 4 gb month plan.. Now Im going on a 100gb plan so I'm pumped!! Bring on the DD!! Nothing better then not having to get up and change the game disc...

+1 :P
Alright I see your point if I had a 360 or ps3 I'd rather have hard copies, but the point is I play pc and there is no way I want to put in discs everytime. Espically since steam automatically updates games and they're so cheap to buy

The only thing that has stopped me getting on the digital distribution bandwagon is that if something goes wrong with my PC and I lose it, yes I can usually download it again but that takes a while to download then eats away at my usage.

And on the other hand I can just put the disk in and start again that way it is less time and effort. And for me I've never lost r broken a disk s that is no worries at all cause I keep all my things in top shape.

At the end of the day I'm happy to go to the shops and have a hard copy.
eh, eb games is a ripoff..
but this cant be true!
lol yeah, EB can go to hell. They're only good for their exclusive crap.

Otherwise, JB or importing will save you MUCH more $$$
Look, your point about DD growing I'm not arguing with. I'm just saying that even in 10 years there still may be a market for hard copy games and DD may not be the only way to purchase.

Yes, by then DD is more that likely to be the main sauce of media distribution, I never said it wasn't going to be...
I don't see why all games would need to be distributed in the same way?

I like my hard copies, but like SACRED mentioned, Steam has made PC gaming so much easier and enjoyable with DD. :S
its not feasible to police this ,realisticaly selling or trading 2nd hand games will continue regardless ..this is hardly something worth worrying about! if a law changes then something like ebay and certain scum bag shops would stop selling them ..that wouldnt stop private sales in the slightest and would there be a special police squad dedicated to this? .... HA! ,says Mole! ,HOORAH! says Badger YAY! ,says Toad

...the general consencus is NO!

I doubt it'll be the end of EB, it well affect them adversely though. Goodbye huge profit margin!
This was in America, so it won't have any effect on EB Australia.

Anyway, that ruling is a massive load of bull***. If I buy a car, I can sell it to someone else. If I buy a race horse, I can sell it to someone else. If I buy a television, I can sell it to someone else. Basically, I can sell anything I own. If I buy software I should most certainly be allowed to on-sell it, as long as it is not software which has some sort of National Security sales restrictions imposed on it, of course.
Ok for those of you who think Digital Distribution means no hard copy:

It does not mean that at all. You can back multiple games up into one master file, or separate games broken up into sizes you specify, or hell you could just do it the easy way and get this:

About $150 and yes, it does work in a Mac. For $300 you could have 4TB extra in your Mac Gaetano, and then whats stopping you?

I really do not give a rats ass about EB Games or any other games retailer, they could all shut down tomorrow and I couldn't care less. You'll struggle to find many PC gamers that do not share that view, as we're already heavily involved in Digital Distribution and have reaped the benefits long enough to no longer care.

You will probably all be the same when DD comes to console in a big way. You can't imagine it now, but wait until you are paying $5 for games that are only a year old. Suddenly re-selling them is no longer an issue, whats the point? You paid next to nothing for it? Is your time really that invaluable that you're willing to sell a game you paid $5 for?

The only game on my whole Steam list I regret buying is Modern Warfare 2. Not because I want to resell it, but because I regret showing, with my money, that a game with no dedicated servers is worth buying. So on principle.

I also get most of my PC games from steam, but I always prefer to get hard copy console games.
if the price dropped significantly then i will support DD.
This is just bull crap like sword saint said why should they get a cut of the second hand price when they already got money from the original owner, this is just a way to make more money because they know the preowned market does so well. [Rage]
so will i support like hell

hey jimmiq ;)
I'm all for steam for buying my pc games there is no were else better then steam for it.
wait a minute i cant make sense of the OP article. Is it saying its no longer legal to sell your games second hand or some shit?
once you buy the game YOU are the owner of the licence not the company

if they put a license somewhere on the case you cant sell it, i think

If it has some mumbo jumbo on the case then yeah.
Guys, guys, this was in America. There is no legislation affecting Australian sales of second-hand games.
