Yeah. I've been playing computer games since the 70s. Dad got a pong machine. Games were frankly mindless until the Playstation age. Having the ability to have proper music rather than that midi crap was the turning point in my mind. Prior to that, there were the _occasional_ good-ish games with "story" but you really had to use your imagination. You don't any more... Other than that it was just repetitive rubbish. I played them, but it is like stuff you did as a child that when you think about now you cringe. Or even Wes Craven films. I loved them as a teen. Then when I make the mistake of seeing them now I think they are just lame. So I tend to leave them as fond memories now and won't look at them again. I don't feel nostalgic about the games though..... I find the nintendo set to be more nostalgic about them though. The nintendo games are often more "old school"

hey man what about the Amiga that had some awesome game on it some of the best ever, monkey island was 1 of the best games ever and what about S W I V, Shadow Of The Beast, magic Pockets, they are classics, i too love the new games but you cant deny the old ones even the C64 had classics
C64 was a goldmine of awesome, but I was young then.

We got donated a C64 after our house burnt down around 11 years ago. It was our only source of gaming, as the nintendo 64 was a lump of melted plastic.

They also donated a ridiculous amount of games :D

Good memories of the C64!
oh god i wish i could Aztec challenge or Hunchback right now classic stuff, and impossible mission the very fist game with speech i think ahh yes the c64 classic stuff
LOL i love that site ;)
Nostalgia makes everything seem better than it actually was. See: Rose-tinted glasses.

Try playing some of those old games that you haven't played in 10 years and you'll see what I mean.

Commander Keen (for instance) plays like balls compared to modern platformers. It just holds a special place in my gaming history.

As others have said, nostalgia, rose tinted glasses. Dust the C64 off and try playing them now. Maybe you'd like them, but I sure as hell wouldn't anymore. Or even think about pumping coins into a machine to play something as stupid as space invaders. Back in the day it seemed awesome, but the repetitive stupidity of those games makes me gag even thinking of them now.
I love older games. Sure there are a lot out there that haven't stood the test of time but there are many that have. I still regularly play games from the 80's and 90's.

I love my current gen stuff but I'm just as happy to sit down for a session of classic gaming. I guess the Wii (virtual console) is my favourite console.

So glad to see other Amiga gamers out there. SWIV is still awesome today. And as for the C64, I'd still rather play Turrican over half of the 3rd and 1st person shooters available for the current generation.

As important as technical achievements are one thing that should never be forgotten is style. Sure a WRX will out perform 57 Chev in terms of ride and handling but I know what I'd rather be sitting in on a Sunday afternoon.

As for the cracked article, lol ... I'm not too old [Shifty]
Turrican was awesome as :D and same Doss; some have stood up well and some haven't. I can go back and play a lot of VC stuff like the old Zelda games and Mario, or my actual consoles and play Goldeneye and Perfect Dark but there are some I was surprised to see had aged. 1080 snowboarding springs to mine.
i can still sit down for hours and play demon attack or space invaders on my atari 2600. yes theyre repetitive, not very pretty and kinda hard, but theyre great fun.

Only reason Smash is the only game I play now is full time work and study.

You would surely have to be unemployed to pull that off [WTF]

I can pull it off.
Wake up at 7:30
Work at 8:30
Finish work at 5
Home/showered and eaten by 6
6 game
1 sleep
Rinse and repeat

Generaly the easiest way to do it is...
Wake up at 7:30
Work at 8:30
Game at 9
lunch at 12
work at 1
game at 1:30
finish game at 4:30
Finish work at 5
Home/showered and eaten by 6
6 game
10:30 sleep

Awe yeah [MOG]

You obviously missed the Navi lesson when you were growing up, a women put that in the game to train men to pay attention to them, that's really what the whole "Hey listen!" thing was about. 5 Ways to Tell Youre Getting Too Old for Video Games
