Also depends on the game and/or how many games.

I think SCII has a good profit margin for players.

Bigger gaming conventions also have a nice pot for more team oriented games.

Of course I think you also get money from sponsors... if you can get any that is. -_-

But basically any big name gamer probably started out with his computer, a game and a part time job at a petrol station or something to get by until they get a sponsor.

Even then I don't know if your sponsor will even pay you, nowadays it also helps to have a fanbase then using a streaming website such as twitch.tv or justin.tv and become a partner and get some money when playing ads and view count etc.

Or even become a partner wtih youtube and get like $1 per 1000 views I think?

Machinima is probably a decent place to start a fanbase going though.

I'd probably gamble most FPS players don't really get anywhere fast, unless they're truly exceptional mainly because FPS games are team based games and thus pot is split, and FPS itself is a straightforward game in some elements unlike certain MOBAs such as LoL where there's other elements on the player's part like rune sets and masterys then item builds and skill builds.

Although FPS games like CoD does have the perks system, a MOBA like LoL simply has more elements to it.

I hear the fighting community doesn't do to well with pots but they do enough to get by, I don't think they can live off their winnings though it's more like a bonus.

Or everyone could become a poker pro =)
