Broken Promises - Would you boycott a dev?

It happens all the time - big developers and publishers promise gamers the world and then only deliver a fraction of what they originally promise. It's a fact of gaming life, but the latest broken promise in my book was too much.

After EA and DICE paraded the fact that we would never pay for an online service like CoD Elite and used it as a weapon in their marketing, I felt good about my purchase. Less than a year later however, they launch a premium service that is the same as Elite.

Now I know if you're an avid BF3 player and you were setting out to purchase all the DLC anyway, this latest service will save you some coin in the long run. However I am pissed off because DICE went back on everything they said, and it seems they have sold out in a sense.

As a result I'll never play Battlefield 3 again. I won't touch it, and I severely doubt I'll be checking out the inevitable Battlefield 4 when it rolls around either.

That might seem harsh, but I'm wondering if any other gamers out there have had promises broken by developers and they have decided to boycott their titles as a result?

The more I think about it the more I change opinions, I've gone from never buying Bioware, to waiting to see how the DLC goes, to getting over it and everything in between.

Right now, I'd not go back to Bioware, but for me that just means no more ME games, I don't really play anything else from Bioware so it's not a huge loss for me rather than it would be from someone like Bethesda or Valve.

I'll always respect the fact they stuck to their guns on the ending and just decided to add to it rather than change it.

Yeah, I respect them for that too. I guess each instance has a different outcome. I don't think I could forgive DICE for going back on what I see as one of their biggest selling points with BF3

Well, I think you've just got to accept that eventually, things come about money, branding, and publishers try really hard to sell their product. A lot of what they say is subjective, and gamers make the mistake of taking what they say as literal.

"We will have the best destruction ever" is subjective seeing as though it can't actually, really be defined and compared as such. But we take it as, "WE'RE GOING TO GET THE BEST DESTRUCTION ELEMENTS EVER", and then we get disappointed when it's only a little bit better than the last game, or really no different.

As for Mass Effect, the ending was easy and lazy, but I kind of expected it. The experience was worth it so I don't hold any regrets. I enjoyed the experience so I don't mind, and that's all that happens. It takes more than a shitty ending to turn me away from a developer, because Bioware can still make a kickass game, even if they do dumb things down for the common gamer.

EA Sports, on the other hand, hurt me with NBA Elite. NBA Live was once an easy buy for me, but they need to convince me. And if they disappoint me again, I'll never buy one of EA's basketball games again.

Thankfully, I think EA knows how badly it's pissed off its very, very loyal NBA Live community.

It's probably a better sim but I grew up on NBA Live. I just prefer it. But I can admit 2K is a better series. I ain't doubting that.

I want to avoid EA but I love sims too much and waiting for the new expansions to come out on steam kills me.. I was on EA help chat the other day cause my sims pets was missing.. I had to suggest to the person "shouldn't ea have a record of pets being registered?" this was after about 30 minutes of trying to explain where my copy went.. Anyways it was fixed straight after I mentioned that.. So it wasn't too bad.. :P

Now what if the DLC was meant to be a paid for DLC for more of the story because they thought we'd be satisified with what they gave us, but then they realised they messed up hard and now they're giving it for free :P

I love to hate Ubisoft. After the failed release of all the Heroes games :(

They truly broke my heart. 3D0 made it so easy to play and install and then along comes Ubi and stuffs it all up. It's almost like performing brain surgery, one install here, an update here and then BAM- still wont work. Three patches later and you still have nothing.

They released RO2 about a year too early, maybe a year and a half. It's a great game that didn't get the chance it deserved because they rushed it out the door for some reason that no one can understand.

So yeah, it really disappointed me and I don't wanna be disappointed any more.

Honestly sims 3 isn't as good as sims2 and probs never will be.. Stupid ea.. All I want it's out for business or seasons.. But instead I get 2 expansions practically the same as each other, late night and show time.. And Where's the aliens?.. I'll be pissed if I can't have babies with the genie... Piiiiiiisssseed [Rage]
