Flooding in Queensland

First of all, I hope everybody in Towoomba is safe and hasn't lost any loved ones in the flash flooding.

Anyone else in Queensland feeling the major flooding going on? I live in Gympie QLD and if any of you know where that is you'll know we're having lots of fun ^_^ The Mary river Hit 19 meters and is only just starting to fall... with some more heavy rain forecast...

Thanks to Gympie the supply line to pretty much all of northen QLD is cut off.

Post some flood pics here.

@iamtom There is nothing they can do to change the Dam, Unless they build another Dam (Dam number 2) infront of it. But the dam is not a failure, Way_Maker is making Wivenhoe out worse than it is. Because that Dam reached over it's holding capacity, and they opened the Flood Gates then that means every Dam the world over, Is a "failure"

They have Flood Gates for a reason, In this circumstance. The Dam performed how it was suppose to.

The response was lets build an artificial structure to stop flooding, so more people can build.
BIG mistake.
Will we learn from this flood and respond differently to how we responded to 1974?

There is nothing people can do to stop Nature at its worst. For all we know that dam did its work by preventing many minor floods in the past. In the face of such a deluge of water, you can't really say that it didn't do anything to help — if it hadn't been built, people would be complaining about how the dam wasn't there and maybe it could have helped things.

Those same people will now need to take on responsibility for choosing to live in flood plains. If it were me, i would leave and choose to live somewhere that is less prone to the ravages of mother nature.

Brisbane has ALWAYS been known to be a flood plain. This is not something new which is only becoming known.

If i choose to buy a property on Sydney's outskirts in the bush, i am exposing my property to a hugely increased risk of fire. Same goes for those who build their homes in Brisbane re:floods.

Mate, if you can't tell that I was joking from my image, that's pretty odd.

I had no idea Brisbane was a flood plain, and I know a lot of things. I doubt most people of this generation, and the last, know it either.
People are going too crazy at work. I saw someone buy over 20 bottles of milk! Was like " [Rage]" at them for doing so!

Why would you buy 20 bottles of Milk?! They'd go off at a constant, similar rate.

why buy 20 bottles of milk, they arent even going to last two weeks

then you just have bottles of cream

It is a failure in the sense that many have a completely unfounded belief we can ALWAYS control nature and that was one of the aims of wivenhow. We cannot.

Choose to live with floods rather than build dams.

@iamtom to be honest with you, i never bothered lookin at the photo
I KNOW! That's why I was all " [Rage]" at them. It was loaded into the back of their car as I walked passed. Also, people are buying so much bread and bottled water and fruit/veg. Make me do more work! [Rage]

Untrue. [Facepalm] Pasteurised milk can last months if kept properly sealed.

Edit: Whoops, sorry: Ultra-Pasteurised, or UHT, is the milk that lasts for months. Wiki says 6-9 months!

Because so many people are ignorant of considering nature, ESPECIALLY when buying property.

It is NOTHING new and easily accessible information:

"There's nothing new about the Brisbane “flood map” – it existed before the 1974 flood but only came to light in that tragedy's aftermath as evidence of town planning gone hopelessly wrong.

Back in '74 the partial excuse offered for dumb government was that such a deluge was rated a “one in 100-year” event. So, presumably, it was OK to lose a few lives and vast amounts of personal belongings once a century.

Some 37 years later, there's less excuse. A new dam or not, the lesson of 1974 was obvious: parts of Brisbane were not suitable for housing, or at least not suitable for modern box-on-a-cement-slab housing. Air circulation and the opportunity to “brick in” decades down the track weren't the only reason the typical old Queensland home was built on high stumps. The freakish flash flooding of areas not previously flood-prone is one matter, but the majority of the Brisbane flooding is not freakish."

LOL oh dear :P You should have stopped them and said "Hey now. Lets think about this for a minute."

Maybe they were buying them for friends and family. But seriously, why milk? Of all the food you could buy to survive; why the hell would you buy milk?

Baked Beans is where its at. Can be eaten hot or cold, will not spoil, offer plenty of energy and ...er.. fibre... which is useful in floods. And also protein, the only food group your body absolutely needs!

Maybe they have children, Skarty?
if it was me id buy lots of bottled water and formula for my baby :). and baked beans [Derp]
Or cats.

Anything canned is good to go for a loooooong time.

This is a good point, but 20 bottles is extreme.
I was gonna stand there and say "got milk? [MOG]" but decided against it. :P

@Skarteh - Agreed. Of all the things that you could buy to live on, they choose milk. [Facepalm]

@Desi - Oh wow, didn't know that! :O
@way_maker do you even understand what Wivenhoe dam does? It's not there to just try and control mother nature. It's to hold water for all of Brisbane and some of the Gold Coast (and possibly other places) Which would you rather have a Dam holding water for a drought or something, So you can still shower, Have drinking water etc OR not have it? Anyways sorry for the late reply as i was on the phone, So i see the topic has moved on and i will move on with it.
There needs to be a Royal Commission into the town planners that zoned so many flood plains for residential homes.

It is disgusting.

Milk is actually bad for cats.

Your a mother first, huh? Good to know.

even if they had children I wouldn't buy milk.. you'd buy that powdered milk you just add water too.. that way you don't need a fridge :S

i dont think you can question people who have been dead for a few decades
We even sold out of cheerios in the deli, CHEERIOS! That was a very sad time for me. :'(
In the PI the traditional staple food for the regular monsoon-related flash flooding is green bananas. :S
