We saw a brief glimps of New Super Mario Bros. 2 during the main Nintendo conference, but during the 3DS presentation we learned a lot more about the new title.
Golden coins will fill the screen at a far more rapid rate than we are accustomed to from other Mario titles, and it is all tied into the new competitive multiplayer mode known as Coin Rush.
Collect as many coins as possible during a level to fill up your Coin Rush Bank. Then players can compete via Streetpass or Spotpass in the new mode. Choose a level pack (which are based on difficulty) and the game will select three levels at random for you to speed run through. You only have one life, with 1-UP mushrooms being replaced by Golden mushrooms with a coin boost. Grab as many coins as you can, in the shortest amount of time possible and survive all three levels to post impressive scores. Your results will then be displayed on your friends' screens as they try to beat you and claim victory!
If that doesn't do it for you, Nintendo also revealed that the entire single player campaign will be playable with a friend.
New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be launching phsically and digitally on August 19 in the US.
