We already know that New Super Mario Bros 2. will be arriving on Australian shores August 18 and we also know it will be available both in physical and digital form. What we didn't know is that the game will have DLC content in the future, a first for Nintendo first-party games.

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata detailed the premium content during a recent Nintendo conference, revealing that it will feature additional stages for the game's Coin Rush mode.

The content will be developed by the team following the completion of the main game, with pricing details coming in the future.

Sounds like Nintendo are finally getting involved when it comes to online content.

They kind of do, Fire Emblems first DLC was free for the first two weeks of it being up.

How can anybody justify creating 1 or 2 levels with a level editor and attempt to charge hundreds of thousands consumers a few dollars?

Downloadable content is a scam.

You would think games companies would have an interest in keeping a game a live by adding content.

DLC that should be included in the initial release but is released later for profit is a scam. Proper DLC that is created after the game is fully complete is just an optional extra. This DLC is not a scam.

Let me know if you want a hand getting off your high horse or if you want to stay there to reply to this post too.

DLC is easy to make. The graphics libraries are already there. The level editors are already there. The code is there. The marketing is done. The game is sold. The fan base exists.

Free DLC is mutually beneficial. Gamers get to play their favourite titles for longer. Game designers get to test ideas and concepts, extend the life of the game, give a reason for new buyers to buy old games, and keep a fan base hanging on for a real sequel.

Charging a few dollars across an existing fan base for something that took one programmer a week to design is both lazy and greedy.

I dont feel game designers owe me any quantity of faecal matter. But free DLC is for their own benefit.

If 1 million people buy this game and Nintendo offer 2 worlds as free DLC then Nintendo have re-engaged with 1 million consumers

If 1 million people buy this game and Nintendo offer 2 worlds for $1.99 and 50,000 people buy it, thats 950,000 people Nintendo have managed to piss off

Engaging with 1 million people, or $100,000 and having 950,000 people say "what a rip off". I know what I would rather.
