Paper Mario: Sticker Star battles explained

Paper Mario: Sticker Star is bringing the Paper Mario series to a handheld device for the very first time. During the live E3 demo we were introduced to a living, breathing diorama on the Nintendo 3DS system.

During turn-based battles players will use stickers found in the game to unlock attacks. Examples include using a jump sticker to bounce on a Goomba's head, or a turtle shell sticker to kick a green shell towards foes.

It was also revealed that battles won't reap XP, but rather solving puzzles, helping NPC's and exploring the game world will actually grant you experience and level you up through the adventure.

The game is set to launch this holiday season, with a gameplay trailer available right now in the eShop.

So it's just like the Badge system from the previous games?

This is looking to be great; I heard the Wii Paper Mario wasn't the same as the two predecessors so glad to see the 3DS version is taking the series back to its RPG roots.

Not quite. You don't seem to have any basic attacks. The base jump is a sticker that must be equipped.
At least from how I understood it.
Just from the game-play footage I could see that this iteration of Paper Mario is a lot like the original. I noticed many elements, from the way he walked, to the paths that were on the ground. This is a good sign that this Paper Mario won't be as stupid as the last.

I think that the sticker system will either make or break this game, seeing as it's such a major element of the game. If they do it right, then this will be an amazing game.

I'm excited that this series has finally made it's way to a handheld console. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year door is my all time favourite game across any platform, with Paper Mario (64) coming in close behind, and Super Paper Mario was a huge let-down for me. If this game can't successfully pull it off, then I think I may lose my faith in Intelligent Systems.
So wait...
Do you unlock the stickers for permanent use or do you have to collect a sticker for each time you use the attack? :P

Each attack.
You get stickers rather than exp from a battle so you won't run out.

At least that's how I understand it.
