Handheld market isn't shrinking - Iwata

by Ben Salter Featured 6 Comments 9 Votes 297 Views 22/08/2012 Back to News

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata doesn't agree that the handheld market is shrinking, as some would have you believe.

"I think a lot of this discussion is based on the premise that the handheld gaming device market is shrinking or vanishing and I don't think that is true," he told Kotaku.

He also doesn't believe cheap apps on smartphones have diminished the interested in dedicated gaming devices.

"I think that consumers who are willing to pay money for a gaming experience are looking for something that is more rich and are willing to spend some of that valuable time on that experience," he said.

He's right.

A rich gaming experience? That's what home consoles/PC are for.

Mobile gaming will continue to move towards smartphones because of the accessibility and price point.

Moreso than mobile but not as well as PC/console.
He's probably right. But I also don't think handheld gaming can continue unless it at the very least offers "mobile" gaming experience. That is, affordable games that are cheap and easy. I get that Vita, 3DS already offer this, but not really to the extent that might encourage some to randomly buy a handheld.

But it's encouraging to hear that big games will still come from Nintendo. Sony and Nintendo seem focused on keeping it that way, no matter what the direction of the industry.

Microsoft, on the other hand, has hardly any new IP.

Yeah, I know what you mean... but I think this segment will become a little too niche to continue in a similar vain.

I was an original PSP owner and played it heaps, but I don't see myself getting another portable console in the near future.
I can see the difficulty of carrying around so many different devices in your pockets and a phone can cover the gaming spectrum to an extent.

I think it's also difficult to understand Iwata's point of view as well. Isn't handheld gaming increasing in Japan? Maybe his point of view is only in terms for locals?

I personally would take a dedicated handheld device over any smartphone game but unless I'm planning on doing nothing for a bunch of hours (ie car trip, train ride, etc) then I wouldn't bother bringing it out.
